Street Scenes > Mechanic Street
For this view you would stand at the corner of Northeast 3rd Street and 1st Avenue and look east. At the east end of 1st Avenue was a fence that kept people from going down the hill and over the bank into Sweetwater Branch. Across the branch was the Gainesville Graded and High School. It is the oldest school building in Gainesville and is now used by the Alachua County School Board for offices. Northeast 1st Street was called Mechanic Street until July 1, 1950, when most of Gainesville's street names were changed to street numbers. This undated postcard, "Compliments of the Armour Fertilizer Works, Jacksonville, Fla.," was copied with the permission of Archie L. Jackson.
