The Alachua County Library District Heritage Collection is part of an on-going project to digitize and improve access to local history resources through the World Wide Web. The Northeast Florida Library Information Network (NEFLIN) provided the Library District with equipment to digitize an initial collection of 250 historic photographs of local landmarks, family portraits, historic maps, community events, natural disasters, and other items of local interest. Previously, this special collection was only available to on-site library users.

The NEFLIN project, funded by a federal grant program called the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA), is dubbed DISC for Digital Imaging of Specialized Collections. The funding provided the Library District with a web-server workstation, a high-end scanner, and training for staff in electronic image cataloging and web-site building. The goal of the DISC project is to provide researchers, history buffs, genealogists and anyone interested in Florida history with online access to special collections of libraries in north Florida.
